When Mandira Bedi became a household name for being the first woman to host the IPL cricket show, she also got a name for something else: noodle straps (spaghetti straps) and consequently, saris.
Just last month, she launched her own line of quintessentially 'Mandira' saris in Mumbai. And after the immense success the store received, she is all set to expand the business. We caught up with her for an exclusive chat, here are the excerpts:
1. This venture was destined to happen at some point, we feel. Tell us about your journey to having your very own sari label.
To be honest, my husband, Raj, is the reason! It goes like this - One day I walked in to a fabric store and bought a few fabrics - I took them to a tailor and told him what to do! I had no idea how they would turn out! Personally, when I got them back I didn't think they were much to write home about - But when I showed them to Raj he told me that we have something here - and that this idea has a lot of potential. He pushed me, continuously, to believe in myself and design more saris. Over a period of time, I really started to enjoying conceptualizing saris - playing with the different fabrics, designs and colors! And that's it - That's how this label was born!
2. Even in the sari world, there is something for all body types and personality types. Are you catering to everyone, or focusing on the unique 'Mandira' style of saris?
My Sari line is an extension of myself. Every single sari in this line is one i would wear myself. My sari's are a unique spin on the traditional garment - they are traditional yet quirky, classic yet inventive, elaborate yet minimal and au courant.
This fusion of fabrics, colour and detail allows anyone from a teenager to a glam gran mum to carry off my designs. So even though I make sarees that please my eye and my sensibility, I like that anyone who wears a saree well, can carry off my designs, whatever age, shape or size they may be.
3. Speaking of unique, what is your sari style. A little on that please.
My style of Saris are an effective mixture of nets, satins, georgettes, silks and chiffon. Basically, fabrics that drape well- I love marrying fabrics and colors that are contrasting and usually unlikely partners!
I intend them to be effective, beautiful, affordable and absolutely wearable!
4. You just launched your own brand last month. But before that, whose sari designs did you like best?
I have always liked Ritu Kumar's design sensibility and color palette. And over the years have enjoyed Satya Paul's dramatic play with color. Have also worn and loved Masaba's quirky brilliance. I appreciate drama and color on a sari. A sari needs to be effective for me to wear and appreciate it.
The price range of the saris range from is Rs 8,000 to approximately Rs 25,000.
You can buy Mandira Bedi Label saris at Ashrey Building, Ground floor, Corner of 13th and 18th road, Near Fab India, Khar (W), Mumbai, and VAMA, Pedder Road, Cumballa Hill, Mumbai.
